Dog crate size calculator

Measure your dog from nose to the base of the tail, and from the floor to the top of the head while sitting. We add 2–4 inches and match a standard crate size.

How the sizing works

A crate should let your dog stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. We add 2–4 inches to your dog’s length and height, then round up to the next standard crate length (18, 22, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48 or 54 inches). Standard wire crate heights vary by brand, so check the listing’s interior height.

For puppies, buy for the expected adult size and use a divider so the space grows with them.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bigger crate better?

Not for puppies; too much space can encourage accidents. Use a divider.

My dog is between sizes?

Size up.

Do these sizes apply to plastic crates?

Plastic kennels use different size labels; compare interior dimensions.
