Litter-Robot 4
Self-sifting globe for up to 4 cats, with standard clumping litter and a 90-day trial.
- Up to 4 cats
- Clumping litter
- 90-day trial
Short version: the Litter-Robot 4 is worth it for multi-cat homes and owners who want to stop daily scooping, because it uses standard clumping litter and needs emptying about every 8 days for one cat. It is not worth it for a single cat on a budget.
The Litter-Robot 4 is a rotating, self-sifting globe that works with ordinary clumping litter. Whisker rates it for up to 4 cats weighing 3–25 lb, says the drawer may need emptying about every 8 days with one cat, and offers a 90-day in-home trial. The cheaper alternatives are the PetSafe ScoopFree (crystal trays) and a manual Arm & Hammer sifting box.

A raking box with disposable crystal trays, smaller and far cheaper up front.

The Litter-Robot’s value is in time and litter. It sifts after each visit (7 minutes later by default), so cats always find a clean bed, and it uses ordinary clumping litter rather than proprietary refills, which keeps running costs normal.
Whisker says the drawer may only need emptying about every 8 days in a one-cat home, sooner with more cats. Its weight sensors and anti-obstruction system stop the globe if a cat enters, and the app (optional) tracks visits and cat weights, useful for spotting health changes early.
The risks: kittens must weigh at least 3 lb for automatic mode, some cats refuse it, and it is a large, expensive appliance. Whisker’s 90-day in-home trial reduces that risk if you buy direct, though you pay return shipping.
If you like the idea of not scooping but not the Litter-Robot’s price or size, the ScoopFree is the usual alternative. A rake sweeps waste into a covered trap, and the whole disposable tray goes out every few weeks.
The tradeoff is ongoing cost: it needs PetSafe’s crystal trays, so you pay more over time than with clumping litter. Some cats dislike crystal litter.
The honest alternative to any automatic box is a sifting box. You lift the top pan, the clean litter falls through, and clumps stay behind. It takes a minute or two a day and costs a tiny fraction of a Litter-Robot.
There’s no motor to scare a nervous cat and nothing to break, which makes it the best choice if your cat is wary of new things.
Whether it is worth it depends on how many cats you have, your budget and your cat’s temperament.
The more cats, the more scooping you save, and the better the value. One cat makes it a luxury.
Kittens under 3 lb should not use automatic mode. Very large cats need enough room to turn around.
Standard clumping litter keeps the Litter-Robot’s ongoing costs normal; crystal-tray systems cost more over time.
Cornell notes changes in litter box habits can signal illness. Automatic visit and weight tracking can surface those sooner, but don’t replace a vet.
Whisker rates it for up to 4 cats.
Kittens weighing 3 lb or more can use automatic mode. Under that, Whisker recommends a semi-automatic routine with the unit off.
No. Whisker recommends standard clumping clay litter. Non-clumping and pellet litters don’t work.
Whisker says about every 8 days for one cat; more often with more cats. The app notifies you when the drawer is full.
Buying direct gives you Whisker’s 90-day in-home trial, minus return shipping. Retailer returns follow the retailer’s policy.
