Yes, if your dog has slipped a leash, roams off-leash or is a flight risk: Tractive shows live GPS location on your phone wherever there’s cellular coverage. If your dog rarely leaves your side, an AirTag is a cheaper backup, but it’s not live tracking.
Tractive uses GPS plus a cellular connection for live tracking, virtual fences and activity monitoring, and a subscription is required. Tractive lists Basic at $13 a month billed monthly, less per month on annual or two-year plans (October 2026). AirTag has no subscription but relies on nearby Apple devices. Halo Collar 4 adds training feedback at a higher price.

When a dog is lost, minutes matter, and live tracking on a map is what an AirTag can’t do. Tractive also alerts you if your dog leaves a safe zone you draw.
Budget for the subscription: $13 a month billed monthly, or less per month on longer plans. It needs cellular coverage, so very remote areas may have gaps.
An AirTag can help in busy neighborhoods where many iPhones pass by, for the price of the tag and a collar holder.
Apple designs AirTag for items, not pets, and it may not update in parks or rural areas. Use it as a backup, not your plan A.
Halo builds GPS into the collar and focuses on virtual fences with feedback as your dog approaches a boundary.
It costs much more than Tractive and also needs a subscription. Use positive, gradual training with any fence feedback.
A GPS tracker is insurance. Weigh the subscription against how often your dog is off-leash or likely to bolt.
Escape artists and off-leash dogs benefit most from live tracking.
Tractive needs cellular coverage where you walk.
Add device plus subscription for two years before deciding.
Keep your dog microchipped and the registry details current, as the AVMA recommends, whatever tracker you use.
For dogs that roam or bolt, yes: live GPS is the main way to find a moving dog quickly.
Tractive lists Basic at $13 a month billed monthly, with lower monthly rates on annual and two-year plans (October 2026).
No. A subscription is required for tracking.
Only as a backup. It isn’t live GPS and Apple designs it for items.
