Online dog training: is a paid course worth it?
Last reviewed by Alex
Short answer: start with free, reward-based basics; consider a structured paid course if you want a step-by-step plan, and see a certified trainer or veterinary behaviorist for aggression or severe anxiety.
Online training works best for everyday manners: loose-leash walking, recall, crate training and calm greetings. It doesn’t replace in-person help for serious behavior problems.
What are the free options?
- AKC training articles: free step-by-step guides.
- AVSAB humane dog training position statement: why veterinary behaviorists recommend reward-based methods.
- Your local shelter or humane society, which often runs low-cost classes.
What does a paid online course add?
A paid program gives you a sequenced plan and video demonstrations, so you know what to practice each day. One option is the online dog school by Conny Sporrer, an Austrian dog trainer who runs a dog school in Vienna and has written a book on dog behavior. Per the program page, it includes a video library covering recall, loose-leash walking, staying home alone and jumping up, plus live webinars. It is sold through Digistore24.

Biting, aggression, or panic when left alone needs a qualified professional. Look for a certified trainer or ask your vet about a veterinary behaviorist.
